The importance of safe driving around holiday parties and events

It’s that time of year again when someone you know seems to be throwing a holiday party every other day. There are also the highly anticipated annual public events such as the Krewe of Jingle parade and City Park Night of Lights. It’s a good opportunity to have some fun, see some old friends and make the most of the festive season.

It can be really tempting to have a couple of drinks at an event and still feel like you’re safe to drive home. The problem is that, while you might feel fine, it’s likely that you’ll be over the legal blood alcohol concentration for the state of Louisiana. If you’re pulled over by the police, driving while under the influence can have serious consequences.

Why is it more dangerous to drive during the holidays?

Around the holidays, there are often more cars on the road and you may find that people are paying less attention as they’re distracted by thinking of everything they need to do. There’s more chance of drivers feeling tired and stressed while behind the wheel at this time of year due to visiting family and the pressure of the holidays. Aside from human behavior, the roads can also be more dangerous due to poor weather and bad lighting conditions.

The consequences of poor driving and driving drunk

The consequences of unsafe driving can be as minor as irritating other road users to having much more serious repercussions. You can find yourself in an accident where cars are damaged. Even worse is when you, your passengers and passengers in other vehicles are injured, or worse, killed as a result. This can result in criminal proceedings and even a prison sentence for the most serious of offenses, especially if you provide a positive breath test for alcohol to police at the scene of the accident.

The holiday period is one to spend with the people you love. Driving safely, and taking a taxi when you’ve had a drink, is the easiest way you can make sure you stay safe on the road at this time of year.
